I recall when I was so stressed, I thought my head would blow up. During that time, I was teaching college with a 40-minute commute, had two little kids and keeping my house always organized and clean. I’d wake at 4:45 am to fit in exercise and a shower before I awakened the family at 6:00 am. Then off for the day after I had the dinner table set before I left for work. Evenings were filled with kids’ homework and three or more hours at my desk, correcting papers and preparing lectures. Then I’d set the breakfast table for morning. And, I had to do community service for my job. It seemed there was hardly time to breathe let alone time for fun.

Second year of teaching I was asked to teach a course on Stress Management. That was a real eye opener. Course preparation was a coming to Jesus moment for me. I began to realize how much distress I was under and how that affected my family. Through teaching the course, and organizational workshops on stress, I began to heal from the distress I was feeling. I began to delegate home responsibilities and back off from multiple committee assignments at the college. It was a process, but I was able to considerably reduce my distress. Now, I relax easily and apply the stress reduction techniques I teach in the coaching course.

Practicing a two-minute stress reduction exercise for relaxation
Developing an action plan to reduce stress and maximize mirth
